DIY Herbal Gummies

Gummies have become quite the ‘go to’ item for everyone, whether it is to get stoned or for falling asleep or something in between! One of the benefits of the gummy format is that you can make them using just (1) microwaveable container and the mold of your choosing. Simple and practical, so you know I love it! This recipe is one of our classic 1-2-3 type recipes and comes together in about 10 minutes.

The recipe below can be used with any gummy mold, and you will want to use Emily Kyle’s dosage calculator, to figure out what your dosage is per gummy because it is specific to your mold. You can also send me a note and I will guide you through it for your mold.

Garden math: A single 5′ tall Cannabis plant yields about 500g of finished flower. That is enough to make about 80,000 gummies at 1mg/gummy.

1-2-3 Gummies

Ingredients

  • 24mls (5 tsp) THC, CBD or other herbal tincture of your choice
  • 22g (1 tbs) White Sugar
  • 7g (1 tbs) Gelatin
  • 15g (1 tbs) Water
  • 45g (3 tbs) fresh squeezed lemon juice (or juice of choice)
    • optional: big pinch of finely grated lemon zest or similar

Supplies

  • A gram scale. Just get one, your baked goods will thank you by turning out perfect every time. Anyone that you like will work! This one is very highly rated on amazon and is just $14. They all do grams and oz.
  • Microwaveable safe glass container. I love my 2-cup pyrex with a handle.
  • A gummy mold! Go nuts, go with whatever you like and use Emily Kyle’s dosage calculator to do the math. These are a good deal and come with droppers and a bunch of fun options.

Directions

  1. Mix all ingredients in a microwave safe glass container.
  2. Allow the mixture to rest at room temperature for one minute to bloom the gelatin.
  3. Heat in the microwave for 30 seconds. Stir, then heat on high for more time if needed.
  4. Stir mixture again and pour into gummy mold.
  5. Place filled gummy mold into the fridge to cool – at least 30 minutes.
  6. When the gummies are cold, unmold the gummies and put them in an airtight container.
  7. Gummies will remain fresh for several months if stored airtight in the fridge.

Use the droppers that come with your mold, a syringe, or heck a soup spoon to ladle in the liquid

You can toss the un-molded gummies with cornstarch/granulated sugar/powdered to sugar to get a finish you want. This photo shows granulated sugar which comes out all sparkly.

THC, CBD and other Herbal Variations

There is no reason you can’t use any tincture in this recipe. Store purchased tincture? Yes! You want make mint-rosemary-calendula-lavender extravaganza gummies? Go for it! Check in with my fav herbalist Jenny of @the_happy_herban she will have recommendations. If you need to use less than 24mls of tincture (like yours is more concentrated) that is AWESOME! Go right ahead.

A Note on Flavor Combinations

One note is that any Cannabis extracts well, taste like ‘weed’. However, the fruit juice in this recipe typically makes the ‘weed’ flavor disappear. Make a batch and adjust per your tastes.

Colorful Gummies. Yes Please!

Adding a few drops of food dye to your gummies will give them a real pop of color.

Affordable and Practical

As an aside, (1) 5′ tall marijuana plant grown outdoors yields about 500g of finished flower, so enough for 10 jars of tincture or at least 80,000 gummies at 1mg/gummy.

Also, cannabis flower keeps in your pantry, just like flour or oats, so it’s easy to keep on hand and use as needed. Ditto for the alcohol tincture, so once you make a jar you are kind of good to go for a long time.
