DIY Herbal Mints

Curiously stoned mints, anyone? OK, you don’t have to get stoned on these mints (!) but it is an option. This recipe is one of our classic 1-2-3 type recipes and comes together in about 15 minutes.  The recipe below is for ~1 mg of THC/mint; if you need more or less check out Emily Kyle’s dosage calculator, it is my absolute favorite. You can also send me a note and I will guide you through any math.

Garden math: A single 5′ tall Cannabis plant yields about 500g of finished flower. That is enough to make about 80,000 mints at 1mg/mint.

Curiously stoned (or not) Mints Recipe

Recipe makes 320 mints at ~ 1 mg of THC/mint.

Ingredients

  • 24mls (5 tsp) THC, CBD or other herbal tincture of your choice
  • 325g (2.8 cups)Powdered Sugar
  • 0.5g Cream of Tartar
  • 9g Gelatin (1 packet usually)
  • 15g (3/4 tbs) Karo Syrup
  • 30g (2 tbs) Water
  • 4mls (1 tsp) Mint Extract (or other flavor of your choice)
  • 5-10 drops of food coloring (if desired)

Supplies

  • LeeYean Silicone Mini Ice Cube Trays 3 Pack

    • This recipe uses (2) of the molds. If you want the exact same dosage in this recipe, and like square shapes, this is what I purchased off Amazon. If you want to do hearts, stars, hand made mini sculptures or whatever, you’ll need to do the math to calculate dosage. Email me, I will help you.

  • Kitchen aid mixer with paddle attachment. Makes life easier. You can also just mix by hand in a regular bowl.
  • Rolling pin
  • Parchment paper
  • Gram scale. Just get one, your baked goods will thank you by turning out perfect every time.

Directions (see photos)

  1. In a small bowl combine the gelatin, water, and karo syrup and mix with a spoon. You are ‘blooming’ the gelatin, it will just turn into a goopy mush. Yay.
  2. In a mixing bowl combine the cream of tartar and the powdered sugar. Mix.
  3. Add the gelatin bowl to the mixing bowl with the dry ingredients. Mix.
  4. Mix in the tincture, flavoring extract, and food coloring if using. Honestly, you’re going for play-doh consistency here and really can’t over-mix this stuff (joy!). Keep mixing, the more you mix the more it comes together. If it looks dry, add a bit of water. I mean bit of water like 1 tsp at a time. Mix until it looks like play-doh. Better to be a little wet.
  5. Press dough into molds. You can use your hands, and then finish it off with a piece of parchment and rolling pin trimming any excess (the back of a butter knife works great). Put in a safe place to dry, wait a day or two depending on your climate, then un-mold. Store in a container like you would any other candy (think altoids).

THC, CBD and other Herbal Variations

There is no reason you can’t use any tincture in this recipe. Store purchased tincture? Yes! You want make mint-rosemary-calendula-lavender extravaganza mints? Go for it! Check in with my fav herbalist Jenny of @the_happy_herban she will have recommendations. If you need to use less than 24mls of tincture (like yours is more concentrated) that is AWESOME! Go right ahead. You might need to add a bit more water to get the dough to form, but that is totally ok.

A Note on Flavor Combinations

One note is that any Cannabis extracts well, taste like ‘weed’. However, the mint in this recipe makes the ‘weed’ flavor totally disappear. However, if you flavor with something like vanilla, a citrus extract etc., likely you will still get the ‘weed’ flavor. The rule is use the most concentrated extract you can get, aka the stuff at Safeway may not be strong enough, check out a baking supply shop near you or get a multi-pack of LorAnn professional extracts online. For example, I had some ultra concentrated pomegranate molasses in my pantry, so I substituted that in and voila we liked it as a mint alternative (it turns out kind of pink/brown though).

Colorful Mints. Edible Glitter Mints?  Yes Please!

Adding a few drops of food dye to your dough will turn the entire dough that color. If you want to leave the mints white, and then paint them with food dye later, that is totally an option. Sky’s the limit, go nuts. You can even press sprinkles or edible glitter into the dough. Valentines day….. 4th of July red white and blue mints… Halloween with little bats….

Affordable and Practical

If you follow our tincture recipe (makes 144 tsp) and the mint recipe (per 320 mints uses just 5tsp of tincture) you’ll get over 28 mint recipes from 1 jar of tincture (144/5=28). 28 mint recipes x 320 mints per recipe =  8,960 mints at 1mg/mint. Holy jeezys. So I don’t know how much your alcohol costs, but at almost 9k mints I am going to call the supplies ‘free’ and the enjoyment of these mints ‘priceless’. As an aside, (1) 5′ tall marijuana plant grown outdoors yields about 500g of finished flower, so enough for 10 jars of tincture or at least 80,000 mints.

Also, cannabis flower keeps in your pantry, just like flour or oats, so it’s easy to keep on hand and use as needed. Ditto for the alcohol tincture, so once you make a jar you are kind of good to go for a long time.
